For my Health Communications class we were assigned the task of creating a health campaign. I chose Depression as my topic, with a focus on the availability and effectiveness of complementary and alternative treatments/therapies. I was pleased to find that there is a lot of stuff out there which is as affective as, or even more effective than medications, especially for the prevention of depression, and for the treatment of mild to moderate depression and SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). The jury is definitely still out on the best way to handle major depression, although talk therapy and/or several other things in combination seems to be the most promising. Of course I believe that the Gospel of Christ our Savior is the most precious and potent medicine around, but it seems that He has also blessed us with many other ways to help cope with the particular ailments that Adam's sin (and our own) has brought upon us.
Of course this little video is just meant to create interest, and barely scratches the surface of the issue. Here are a few very helpful sites where a wealth of good information and resources on depression (and many other health issues) can be found:
(As its name implies, this is pretty much the authority on the subject)
MedlinePlus - A service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine
(The
section on drugs and supplements is particularly helpful and interesting, although it is not exhausted, because it is limited to what has been scientifically tested)
(Probably better than
WebMD for a lot of things, although that site also has some good stuff)
